Build your own Serum 2 wavetable from scratch

Serum 2's wavetable editor is a room most of us only visit to hit Import. The video at the top gets you drawing the frame, shaping the morph, and saving something that isn't in any preset pack. Keep the DAW open for this one.

◆ start here

Build a Serum 2 wavetable from an initialized frame, not a preset

The editor map gives you harmonic bins and phase bins; the useful move is duplicating a frame, refining it, and turning on Smooth Interpolation on WT Pos so the two frames become one moving shape instead of a jump.

▶ One LFO carries the whole UKG wobble if you patch it right

He runs Osc B as a silent phase-distortion modulator, layers pink noise under the filtered harmonic layer because it sits darker than white, and sends a clean sine sub straight out of Serum past the FX. The movement comes from one retriggering LFO on cutoff, phase distortion, noise amp, sub level, and barely audible Osc B level.

◢ free & gear

All your bus compressor instances, one shared table(free)

Gluon Map sees every instance in the same DAW process, and Global Control does relative changes — lower threshold a touch across several buses without flattening their offsets. It's a console-style compressor, not an emulation of one.

A one-knob harmonizer that stays inside the band you pick(free)

Point COLOR at anything from sub to air, then feed it a scale or interval; it won't wander outside the frequency range you set. Whole-tone and fifth modes make it quick for synth layers and sends.

VocAlign 7 aligns a whole vocal stack in one pass

VocAlign 7 is out at $149 Standard / $199 Pro; Multi-Track View lets one guide track pull every double and backing layer into alignment in a single pass, with Pro adding SmartPitch and RePitch sync. The vendor's claim that natural alignment is unchanged deserves an A/B.

AutoTune Advanced leaves vibrato alone and adds one if you need it

Antares AutoTune Advanced is $450 perpetual or part of AutoTune Unlimited; its DVA mode skips detected vibrato even at fast retune, while Vibrato FX can add a synthetic vibrato to straight takes.

🏛 Blast from the Past

Robin S — Show Me Love (1993) · early '90s
The Korg M1 organ bass patch that taught a generation how sidechain pumping could feel like a heartbeat.
  • synth: Korg M1 — Preset 17, Organ 2. Allan George and Fred McFarlane played it monophonically down low, eighth-note stabs, velocity locked. No layering. That reed-to-bass transient is the whole identity. The same rompler module later anchored deep house in Larry Heard's 'Missing You' and a thousand bedroom tracks.
  • technique: sidechain compression ducking — Key input from the kick drum triggers a compressor on the bass channel. Fast attack, fast release—pull the gain reduction deep enough that the first 60–80 ms of the bass disappears behind the kick transient. That's what makes the M1 line pulse instead of drone.
  • artist: Robin S — The vocal wasn't an afterthought laid over a finished track—Robin S recorded the demo live with the instrumental, and that raw, unpolished performance became the final master. Her delivery turns a club tool into a song you'd send to someone at 2 a.m.
