Duck frequencies, not volume.

Put Trackspacer on your mid-bass bus, sidechain it to the sub. Set Attack to 0.1 ms, Release to 20 ms, Ratio around 70%. It ducks only the frequency range where the sub lives, leaving the mid-bass’s body untouched while the sub punches through cleanly.
