Try the fader before the filter.

Before you cut a frequency, pull the offending channel's fader down a decibel at a time and listen. Most of what reads as mud is a level relationship between two sources, not a resonance in one of them. Reach for a narrow cut only when lowering the fader costs you something the arrangement needs.
