SOSA’s 30-minute track-building workflow for funky house

SOSA’s approach to building a funky house track is fast and minimal — just a reference, Ableton’s stock tools, and a clear sense of what needs to be there. Instead of piling layers, he shows how to separate stems, swap drums, and pull a bassline from audio to MIDI until the arrangement breathes. If your tracks feel overstuffed, this is the opposite move.

▶ When fewer layers fill a room: SOSA builds a track from a reference

He separates stems, swaps drums with Show Similar Files, and rebuilds the bassline from audio to MIDI — all native Ableton. By the time the track’s playing front-to-back with transitions, you’ve barely touched a synth.

Xfer turns the Pink Trombone into a free plugin with a vocal tract FX(free)

The FX version alone is reason enough: pipe any sound through a vocal tract model and hear it form consonants and vowels. Modulation engine with four LFOs and four envelopes, free from the Serum team.

Sparse, Dark, Narrow Break for a Full Drop
Your drop hits with authority because the break stripped back elements, high end, width, and low‑end rumble.
  1. 1. On your drum group, insert an EQ. Engage a low‑pass filter during the break and sweep the cutoff down until the drums lose their top‑end sparkle but keep their drive.
  2. 2. Automate the channel volume (or a Utility gain) on your bass track to dip the level during the break — bring it down until the sub weight subsides noticeably.
  3. 3. In the bars just before the drop, mute or fade out at least two non‑essential elements (pads, extra percussion, one‑shot FX) that play in the drop.
  4. 4. Place a Utility on a bus with stereo elements. Automate Width to narrow the image during the break, then return to 100% at the drop.
Why it works: The ear judges a drop’s impact by contrast — removing density, brightness, bass weight, and stereo width from the build‑up makes the drop feel explosively bigger.

🔮 Producer Horoscope (for fun) — Your snare will sound like a cardboard box until you remember to open the high-pass on the reverb send.

Now switch the reference track back off and see what your arrangement does on its own.
