The bassline trick that starts with your chords

The fastest way to a bassline that fits your track is already in your set — follow the chord roots, then pull them down to where the sub lives. Today’s lead walks through it in Ableton, with the analyzer moves that make it translate.

▶ The bassline method that starts with what you already have

The video walks through copying chord roots, pitching them down two octaves with Ableton’s Pitch MIDI tool, then checking the sub at 60 Hz and the audible harmonics at 300 Hz with Pro‑Q 4. The sidechain and resonant filter moves are what make that bassline work on a club system and a phone speaker.

◢ the word

Elastic Melody gets bass and DFAM‑style percussion

The free morphing synth now does bass and DFAM‑inspired percussion, with ping‑pong delay and Datorro reverb. If you’re on Mac or iOS, it’s a lightweight way to get evolving low‑end and metallic hits without a second plugin.

▶ Sasha’s Ableton session: why he deletes all MIDI and works from raw sounds

Mike Koglin breaks down Sasha’s Ableton Live setup: delete all MIDI clips, work only with raw sounds, then build basslines by drawing every third 16th note and duplicating with mute patterns. The resampling trick on reverb tails and the Logic 16 swing 54 quantization are the moves that tighten the groove.

🎯 Tonight's Move
Volume-only UKG bass pump (no filter ducking)
Your bass line gets a classic UKG rhythmic pulse shaped solely by volume modulation, not by sweeping the filter.
  1. 1. Load a synth with two sine-wave oscillators. Tune Osc 2 +3 semitones (minor third).
  2. 2. Dial in a low-pass filter at 12 dB/octave, set cutoff around halfway.
  3. 3. Assign an LFO to oscillator amplitude (or amp level). Set shape to triangle, sync rate to 1/16, and enable osc reset / LFO retrig.
  4. 4. Increase modulation depth until the volume pumps in time with the groove.
Stock path: No Diva: use Ableton Analog — Osc 1 & 2 as sine, Osc 2 Semi +3; LFO 2 target Amp, LFO Retrig On.
Why it works: Volume dips create the rhythmic breathing without the phase shift of filter movement, so the sub stays solid while the ear locks onto the cyclical loudness as a groove.

🔮 Producer Horoscope (for fun) — Your bassline will accidentally hit 47 Hz and rattle the desk; call it character.

Now go bounce that bassline to audio and move on.
