Poly chords from mismatched samples in one key

Sampling without a key signature sounds like a studio myth, but today's lead video walks through a KETTAMA-style poly-chord method that needs nothing but semitone counting and a few free plugins. You'll be pitching pads and choir chops into one key, then slicing them into playable MIDI notes by the end of the tutorial.

◆ start here

▶ One key, many samples: the Ketma-style poly chord method

You grab a stabby pad in F minor, a choir sample in A# minor, time-stretch and pitch them all into B minor, then slice the result into MIDI chops you can play like a chord instrument. No theory, just semitone counting.

📡 on the radar

Two routing tricks keep surfacing: 'flavor → shape' pushes your reverb and delay returns through an 1176-style compressor to clamp transients before they hit the mix bus, so the ambience sits without poking out. 'Shape → flavor' does the opposite — compress and EQ the dry hit before feeding it into stereo effects, so the tail inherits a controlled attack. And for kick replacement, the new ritual is to crop stray hits off the extracted kick sample (right-click > crop) before swapping, or the tail can flam with the original.

▶ Mono check ritual and A/B key mapping in Ableton

Solo your reference track with a single computer key, compare sub and brightness in SPAN, and flip to mono to catch phase-widening collapses. The workflow covers export settings for streaming too, if you've been second-guessing dither.

▶ Cardboard kick, tap-water hat, sander bass — UKG from a hardware store

You'll see how to shape a kick from a cardboard hit with low-pass and saturation, turn a clap into a snare, and exploit pitch-dependent loop lengths so a sung fragment evolves into shifting chords. The Groove Pool only applies swing when you actually raise the global amount — a small but real gotcha.

Match EQ that captures spectrum in 3 seconds, with dynamics(free)

Polarity-MEQ learns the spectrum of any track, then moves your mix toward it with separate Mid/Side and dynamic processing. Carve mode cuts space for a sidechained source; the export-to-impulse-response trick is a nice bonus for Bitwig users.

CDJ-3000 firmware pulled after OneLibrary playlist scare

AlphaTheta rolled units back to v3.20 after a bug made playlists appear empty on v3.30. No data was lost, but if your booth is on the new firmware, reinstall v3.20 before your next gig.

Why the 808 feels drunk, in milliseconds

The original CPU polls inputs every 1.9ms, adds ~2.9ms latency, and jitter up to 1.9ms — that's the push-pull feel. The TR-8oh8 plugin clones it with a legacy clock mode, and a tighter mode when you want it.

🎯 Tonight's Move
Ketma-Style Poly Chords from Any Key-Tagged Samples
Your track gets dense, evolving stab stacks by transposing samples labelled with different keys into one shared key, slicing them to quarter-note MIDI chops, and triggering the best slices over your beat.
  1. 1. Grab 3–5 samples labelled with their key (stabs, pads, noisy textures).
  2. 2. Pick a target key (e.g. B minor), open the piano roll, count semitones from each sample’s key root to the target — nearest direction first.
  3. 3. In Ableton Clip View, set the Transpose knob to that semitone count (e.g. -6 for F minor → B minor, 1 for A# minor → B minor; try -11 for a mangled sound).
  4. 4. Layer two samples from different categories (e.g. a pad and a noisy one), listen for moments you like, then resample the full stack to one audio clip.
  5. 5. Right-click the resampled clip → Slice to MIDI, set slice length to 1/4 note (0.25 beat). Each slice now on its own key.
  6. 6. Play the chops via MIDI; add delay, reverb, high-pass to strip lows, and pitch slices +7 or +12 semitones for turnarounds.
Why it works: Samples with different harmonic fingerprints forced to the same root create unstable, layered tensions that sound like chord extensions—your ear reads them as ‘poly chords’ without knowing theory.
