The 3-layer low end that reads as one sound

Benza’s approach to kick and bass isn’t about the perfect sample — it’s about making sub, toms, and a mid layer read as a single sound. Plus a Meld atmosphere patch that drifts for minutes, and the minor-third hook from a classic ’90s rave anthem you can steal tonight.

◆ start here

▶ Glue sub, toms, and mid-range into one low-end sound

Benza layers a Granulator sub, a tom layer, and a mid-range detail, then sidechains and high-passes until the three sources fuse into one perceived sound. The real move is the A/B test that kills any layer that adds low-end weight without helping the pocket.

◢ learn

▶ A Meld atmosphere patch where two engines cross-fade into each other

Engine B’s rain oscillator runs a looped envelope so a one-shot texture becomes a self-repeating bed. Engine A’s swarming triangles swell in and out at different lengths — and the plate resonator is tuned from MIDI pitch to stay in key with every note you play.

▶ The minor-third lead hook from Meet Her at the Love Parade, built in Hydrasynth

Oscillator 2 pitched up 3 semitones against oscillator 1 gives the famous interval. The rest is an aggressive MS-20-style filter, a ping-pong delay, and a hall reverb with a 3.5 s decay that does most of the work — kill the filter drive and the whole sound thins out.

Overtonium, an additive synth where just intonation meets per-partial editing

The master Tune control blends between just intonation (partials fuse into a single timbre) and equal temperament (partials become semitone offsets, sounding chordal). Link system lets you edit matching parameters across selected channels with weighted curves. Tiered $29–$89.

Beatport carved 'Indie Tech' out of Indie Dance

If you dig for club-leaning tracks that used to sit under Indie Dance, they're now on the Indie Tech page with its own Top 100. The split pulls Adam Ten, Mita Gami, and peak-time stuff into a new chart, while Indie Dance keeps the post-punk, disco, and leftfield cuts.

Glossary
mid-side eq — Mid-side EQ means you EQ the mono center (mid) and the stereo sides of a signal separately — flip Ableton's EQ Eight or FabFilter Pro-Q 3 into M/S mode and you're there. The house move: high-pass the sides so your low end stays dead center and club-tight, then boost the sides up top for width without ever touching the bass. — seen in Stop Mixing Vocals One Track at a Time

Octave‑locked pitch bends from Serum 2’s Bend control
Your pitch wheel sweeps land exactly one octave up or down, making each bend feel like a deliberate pitch‑shift rather than an atonal wobble.
  1. 1. Load Serum 2 on a MIDI track.
  2. 2. Look at the bottom‑left corner—the Bend knob is sitting right there.
  3. 3. Set the Bend knob to 12.
  4. 4. Play a note and push the pitch wheel fully up or fully down; the pitch jumps a full octave. Now every bend gives you musical, predictable shifts.
Stock path: No Serum 2? Any synth with a bend‑range parameter works—e.g., Ableton’s Analog: set Bend Range to 12 st in the Voice section.
Why it works: Setting the bend range to one octave ensures the full sweep covers a recognizable musical interval, so the gesture feels like an intentional pitch shift rather than an atonal flutter.
