Load a piano or electric piano – something sustained – and turn off your metronome.
Play chords searching for a mood that moves you. If a pass feels stiff, re-play it looser; no quantize yet.
Once the progression feels complete, add a simple kick-snare pattern. Slowly nudge the tempo until the drums feel like they’re cradling the chords, not leading them.
Duplicate the chord MIDI, mute it, and extract the root notes. Use those to write a bassline that anchors the groove.
